The Houses Cube

The same people as the register, on a time axis and on the ground. First flat, flowing right: every reign as a bar with its name on it. Then standing up: each house a column on its own seat, each accession a shape, each marriage an arc at the height of its year — and at every transfer, the reach a seat could claim, drawn as a field that fades and never as a border.

Every reign of the three houses on one time axisA bar per reign, its name written on it, the mode of accession as a glyph at its start; a dashed outline is a contested record, a dotted bar an accession the archive has not read.145015001550160016501700175018001850MarwarJodha · 1444–1488 · inheritanceJodhaSatal · 1488–1491 · inheritance · contestedSatalSuja · 1491–1516 · inheritance · contestedSujaGanga · 1516–1532 · inheritanceGangaMaldeo · 1532–1569 · inheritanceMaldeoRao Chandrasen · 1569–1584 · designation · contestedRao ChandrasenUdai Singh (Mota Raja) · 1584–1595 · installation · contestedUdai Singh (Mota Raja)Sur Singh · 1595–1620 · inheritanceSur SinghGaj Singh · 1620–1638 · installationGaj SinghJaswant Singh · 1638–1707 · designationJaswant SinghAjit Singh · 1707–1724 · restorationAjit SinghAbhai Singh · 1724–1750 · installationAbhai SinghRam Singh · 1750–1752 · inheritanceRam SinghBakht Singh · 1752–1753 · usurpationBakht SinghBijai Singh · 1753–1793 · inheritanceBijai SinghBhim Singh · 1793–1803 · usurpationBhim SinghMan Singh · 1803–1843 · restoration · contestedMan SinghMewarRana Sanga (Sangram Singh I) · 1509–1530 · inheritance · contestedRana Sanga (Sangram Singh I)Ratan Singh II · 1530–1531 · inheritance · contestedRatan Singh IIVikramaditya of Mewar · 1531–1535 · inheritance · contestedVikramaditya of MewarBanbir (Vanvir) · 1535–1541 · usurpationBanbir (Vanvir)Udai Singh II · 1541–1572 · restoration · contestedUdai Singh IIRana Pratap (Pratap Singh) · 1572–1597 · installationRana Pratap (Pratap Singh)Amar Singh I · 1597–1621 · inheritanceAmar Singh IKaran Singh II · 1621–1628 · designation · contestedKaran Singh IIJagat Singh I · 1628–1654 · inheritanceJagat Singh IRaj Singh I · 1654–1681 · inheritance · contestedRaj Singh IJai Singh · 1681–1700 · inheritance · contestedJai SinghAmar Singh II · 1700–1710 · inheritance · contestedAmar Singh IISangram Singh II · 1710–1734 · inheritance · contestedSangram Singh IIAmberRaja Bihari Mal of Amber · 1548–1575 · inheritanceRaja Bihari Mal of AmberBhagwant Das (Bhagwandas) · 1575–1592 · inheritanceBhagwant Das (Bhagwandas)Raja Man Singh I of Amber · 1592–1615 · designation · contestedRaja Man Singh I of AmberBhao Singh · 1615–1621 · inheritanceBhao SinghMaha Singh · 1621–1625 · inheritance · contestedMaha SinghJai Singh I (Mirza Raja) · 1625–1699 · installation · contestedJai Singh I (Mirza Raja)Sawai Jai Singh II · 1699–1743 · inheritanceSawai Jai Singh II
A bar per reign, the name on the bar, the accession mode as a glyph at its start. Dashed vertical lines are the dated marriages between houses; undated ones are listed beneath the tank. 14301860 shown; a reign that runs past the edge is clipped, not shortened.

What the floor shows, and what it refuses to

The disc that spreads on the floor at each accession is the reach a seat could claim at that moment — a construction from the seat outward, fading with distance, in the method the flat map already uses. It is not a border. None of the archive’s citations gives a border line for any of these states in any year, and a drawn polygon would be an invented fact. What the floor can show is every place the archive can cite, as a dot: the archipelago of seats, forts and shrines that was the real shape of power here.
