A boy of ten or eleven taken out of a hill-fort by Shahji Bhonsle and crowned, and a state run in his name for three years until a treaty between Shah Jahan and Bijapur divided the kingdom and left no throne to sit on.

The last claimant

Sarkar, in House of Shivaji, has Shahji take from a hill-fort “a Nizam Shahi prince named Murtaza, aged 10 or 11 years, who had been kept there as a State-prisoner” and crown him — the archive’s essay on the extinction quotes the passage and records that Sarkar’s two sources disagree about which fort. “Murtaza Nizam Shah III” is a modern convention, not a settled fact; the same essay sets out the competing numberings. The Great Houses record the accession as an installation and mark it contested for the name.
