The other shore

Harar was a centre of Islamic learning and trade in the Horn of Africa, walled in the sixteenth century and long a terminus for routes running inland and to the Red Sea coast.

It appears in this corpus for a specific reason: it is where Malik Ambar came from. The Deccan’s links to East Africa were not incidental, and the *Habshi* presence in western India is their durable trace.
