The Alchemy of Black
Bidri is, in the Victoria and Albert Museum's compressed definition, 'a blackened zinc alloy usually decorated with silver' — a description that conceals a small chemical miracle [1]. The body of a bidri vessel is cast from an alloy that is overwhelmingly zinc: workshop accounts give the recipe as 95 per cent zinc to 5 per cent copper, melted at around 800 degrees Fahrenheit [8], and analyses of historic pieces have found traces of tin and lead alongside [5]. Freshly cast, the metal is an unpromising grey. The transformation comes at the very end of the process, when the finished, inlaid object is covered with a mud paste containing sal ammoniac — ammonium chloride — which turns the base metal a deep, permanent black while leaving the silver inlay untouched [5]. The paste is rinsed away, oil is rubbed in to deepen the matte finish, and the design stands out in white metal against darkness [9].
The famous, and verifiable, peculiarity of the recipe is the mud itself. The blackening earth is traditionally dug from the inner recesses of Bidar's fifteenth-century fort — soil said to have been shielded from rain and sun for centuries, and rich in the alkali nitrates that do the chemical work when mixed with ammonium chloride and water [9]. The Salar Jung Museum's curators put the chemistry plainly: 'the active agent for blackening the surface is an alkali nitrate, which when mixed with ammonium chloride and rubbed with water gives the dark hue' [7].
Eight Stages, from Mould to Midnight
Craft documentation in Bidar describes an eight-stage sequence: moulding, smoothing by file, designing with chisels, engraving with chisel and hammer, inlaying with pure silver, a second smoothing, buffing, and the final oxidising with soil and ammonium chloride [13]. Each piece is cast individually in a mould of soil made malleable with castor oil and resin; the casting is then fixed on a waxed stone so the artisan can cut the design into its surface with small chisels, and fine flat wires or sheets of pure silver are hammered into the chiselled grooves [8].
The inlay techniques carry Persian names that double as a taxonomy of the craft: tarkashi, wire inlay; taihnishan (tehnishan), sheet inlay; zarnishan, low relief; zarbulund, high relief; and aftabi, in which the design is cut out and overlaid so that the black ground itself forms the pattern [6]. A Lucknow variant favoured the high-relief zarbuland manner [13]. What unites them all is the final inversion: on most inlaid metalwork the ground is bright and the ornament dark; on bidri, as the Metropolitan Museum notes of a seventeenth-century huqqa base, the base metal 'is darkened through a chemical process to highlight the sheen of the inlaid metal' [4].
A Persian Rumour, a Deccani Fact
Where the technique came from is genuinely contested, and the honest account is a braid of stories rather than a single thread. The Salar Jung Museum states flatly that the craft has 'its origins in Persia' and flourished under the Bahmani and Baridi sultanates of the Deccan [6]. The popular origin legend, repeated with variations, names one Abdullah bin Kaiser, 'a craftsman from Iran' invited by Sultan Ahmed Shah Bahmani to decorate the royal palaces at Bidar [13]; in the Salar Jung's telling the same artisan migrates instead to Bijapur and teaches the craft to locals there [6]. A recent account excerpted by ThePrint offers a third braid: Persian and Syrian artisans migrating under Bahmani patronage, knowledge passing through Bijapur, and production in Bidar itself beginning under Alauddin Ahmad Bahmani II, who reigned from 1436 to 1458 [11].
Against these fifteenth-century attributions stands the material record, which is stubbornly later. The earliest evidence of a bidriware object is not an object at all but a Deccani painting of about 1625, in which an officer of African descent smokes a hookah rendered in the bidri technique [10]. The V&A, whose scholars have studied the ware closely, is correspondingly cautious: bidri 'is thought to have originated' in Bidar, and 'Surviving pieces date from the late 16th or early 17th century' [3]. The Met's Deccan survey simply credits Bidar under its Barid Shahi rulers as the city 'famed for a metalworking technique invented there' [5]. Whether the craft is a Bahmani import from Iran or a seventeenth-century Deccani invention wearing a Persian genealogy, the sources do not yet allow us to say — and the essayist should not pretend otherwise.
The Court's Equipment
What the workshops made was, first of all, the furniture of courtly pleasure and etiquette: hookah bases, bowls (abkhora or katora), ewers (aftaba), betel boxes (pandan or khasdan), spittoons (ugaldan), cot legs, candelabra, incense burners, rosewater sprinklers, even Shia standards and cups with Quranic inscriptions [12]. The bell-shaped and globular huqqa base is the emblematic form — the Met's late seventeenth-century example from Bidar, cast in zinc alloy, engraved and inlaid with brass, is strewn with irises and was once fitted with a stem, brazier and pipe [4]. Bidri travelled to the Mughal, Rajput and Maratha courts, and the technique itself migrated: to Purnia and Murshidabad by the late eighteenth century and to Lucknow by the nineteenth [11]. The V&A notes that 'by the mid-19th century other centres, notably Lucknow, were also producing bidri wares'; its own silver-inlaid Lucknow bottle of about 1885 was bought at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London in 1886 for £7 7s [2].
The great public collections tell the story in objects. The Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad holds the deepest trove — 'nearly 600 pieces from the 16th to 20th century', from huqqa bases and ewers to trays, basins and boxes [7]. The Metropolitan Museum's Islamic galleries keep bidri huqqas, ewers, basins and pan boxes among the arts of the Deccan [4], and the V&A's South Asian collection preserves both Deccani and Lucknow production, including an eighteenth-century huqqa ringed with peacock-feather motifs in silver wire [3].
Bidar, Still Making
The craft never left its birthplace. Bidar, with Hyderabad, remains a chief centre of production [11], and bidriware today ranges from ewers and vases to keychains, cufflinks and nameplates [9]. The craft carries India's Geographical Indication protection tying the name to its home region [8]; one account dates the GI tag to 2009 [14], though other published dates differ, and the discrepancy is flagged below.
The living craft's most curious modern crisis concerns its oldest ingredient. When Bidar fort came under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India, 'the clay became inaccessible to the artisans', threatening the finishing process at the heart of the ware; scientists at IIT-Madras, working with the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts and the NGO Sahayog, have now formulated a chemical substitute for the fort soil — an intervention meant to sustain both the craft and the monument it has quietly mined for centuries [9]. It is a fitting late chapter: a black art whose secret was always, literally, the ground beneath the fortress — now reverse-engineered so that the fortress may keep its ground and Bidar its craft.
Open questions
The GI registration date is inconsistently reported (Wikipedia gives 3 January 2006; Digital GI gives 2009); the official GI Registry entry (application number, applicant, registered proprietor) should be verified from ipindia.gov.in before any date is stated as fact.
The Abdullah bin Kaiser origin legend appears in at least two incompatible versions (invited to Bidar by Ahmad Shah Bahmani vs. migrating to Bijapur); no primary-source basis for the figure was located in this research pass.
The gap between fifteenth-century origin attributions and the earliest material evidence (c. 1625 painting; surviving pieces from the late 16th/early 17th century) remains unresolved — Susan La Niece and Graham Martin's technical examination of bidri ware (cited widely but not fetchable in this pass) would be the key scholarly source to consult.
Current numbers of practising bidri artisans in Bidar, and the adoption rate of the IIT-Madras clay substitute, could not be verified from fetched sources.
