Rampur — the Rohilla Nawabs
1774 marks Nawab Faizullah Khan's establishment of Rampur State in the presence of the British commander Colonel Champion, at the close of the Rohilla War. 1949 marks the state's merger into the Republic of India. Imperial Gazetteer (2026-09-22): The Gazetteer confirms 1774, the year Faiz-ullah Khan was permitted to retain Rampur as a separate jagir after the British-backed Rohilla War, matching the row's start date; it does not reach the 1949 accession to India, which postdates its 1908 compilation.

The Rohillas, however, failed to fulfil their pecuniary obligations; and the Nawab Wazir obtained from Warren Hastings the use of a British army, which defeated the Rohillas and brought Rohilkhand under the direct rule of Oudh. An exception, however, was made in the case of Faiz-ullah Khan, who was permitted to retain the estate or jagir of Rampur on condition of military service.
