From Bijapur to the Mughal camp
Khalil Ullah Khan had fought for Abul Hasan Qutb Shah of Golconda against Prince Shah 'Alam's Mughal army, but the Golconda minister Madanna grew to suspect his loyalty and moved to have him arrested. The register describes the defection that followed: "Consequently Khalil Ullah near Haidarabad, in the 29th year, joined the Prince, and on his recommendation received the rank of 6,000 and the title of Mahabat Khan" (vol. II, p. 9). The following year, after the fall of Bijapur, he was appointed governor of Berar on the death of Hasan 'Ali Khan Bahadur.
Death in office
His career under Aurangzib continued upward after Berar: an increase in rank after the conquest of Haidarabad, and in the same year appointment as governor of the Panjab. The page records that his tenure there was brief. "In the 32nd year he died. The words 'Mahabat Khan' give the date of his death" (vol. II, p. 9), the compiler notes, since the letters of his title formed a chronogram for the year. His grandson Muhammad Mansur, who had arrived from Iran soon after he joined Mughal service, was given the title Makramat Khan in his stead.
