Golconda was a market
The first correction the subject needs is geographical. Golconda is a fortress on the western edge of modern Hyderabad, built in mud by the Kakatiyas in the eleventh century and rebuilt in granite by the Qutb Shahis into "a massive fortification of granite extending around 5 km (3.1 mi) in circumference" [6]. No diamonds were mined there. "Golconda was the market city of the diamond trade, and gems sold there came from a number of mines. The fortress-city within the walls was famous for diamond trade" [6].
The stones came from the river valleys to the south-east: "Golconda is renowned for the diamonds found on the south-east at Kollur Mine near Kollur, Guntur district, Paritala and Atkur in Krishna district" [6], in "the Godavari-Krishna delta region of Andhra Pradesh" [5]. What the fortress supplied was cutting, valuation, security and buyers. "Because of the vicinity of diamond mines, especially Kollur Mine, Golconda flourished as a trade centre of large diamonds known as Golconda Diamonds" [6], and the fort "used to have a vault where the famous Koh-i-Noor and Hope diamonds were once stored along with other diamonds" [6].
The scale of the monopoly is the second thing to hold onto, because it explains everything downstream. "At that time, India had the only known diamond mines in the world" [6]; "For 2,000 years, Golconda diamonds were the only known fine diamonds" [5]. Every great historical diamond in Europe, Persia and Russia before the eighteenth century came from this one region, because there was nowhere else for it to come from.
Kollur: a seam one foot thick
The greatest of the mines was Kollur, and its physical description is unglamorous to the point of being startling. It was "a series of gravel-clay pits on the south bank of the Krishna River" [4]. The pits reached "a maximum depth of 4 metres (13 ft) due to the high water table", and "The diamond-bearing seam was approximately 1 foot (30 cm) thick", across workings "1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) long and between 500 metres (0.31 mi) and 800 metres (0.50 mi) wide" [4]. The treasure houses of three continents were filled from a strip of gravel you could walk in twenty minutes.
It opened late and suddenly. "Kollur Mine was discovered around 1619 and was the first of 23 diamond mines to open in Golconda" [4]. Two European merchants recorded the rush: "William Methwold, an English merchant, visited the mine with Andries Soury of the Dutch East India Company during a trip to India in 1621. According to them, between 20,000 and 30,000 people worked at the mine and 'jewelers of all the neighbouring nations resorted to the place' following news of its discovery, which had caused a notable fall in diamond prices" [4]. A discovery large enough to move the world price, two years after it was found.
At its height the industry ran "23 mines, of which Kollur Mine was the most active, operated in the region with 30,000 people at a time working in one mine", and total output across all of them is estimated at "around 10,000,000 carats (2.0 t)" [5].
Who dug them
The archive's other essays on Deccan luxury — bidriware, wootz, attar — are able to name the craft and sometimes the craftsman. Here the record names the buyers and counts the labourers. "At the height of production, up to 60,000 men, women, and children performed various jobs. Kollur had a population of around 100,000" [4].
The conditions are recorded plainly and should be quoted rather than summarised: "Mining was crude, labour-intensive, and dangerous. Miners wore loincloths, slept in huts covered with straw, and were often given food in lieu of money for wages. The pit walls, with no timber supports, were prone to caving in after heavy rains, killing dozens of men at a time (women and children worked on the surface)" [4].
Enslavement is inside the record too, though it enters as legend rather than as accounting. The Regent Diamond's origin story is that "the diamond was discovered by an enslaved man in the Kollur Mine near the Krishna River in India and was concealed by the slave in a leg wound, which he suffered while fleeing the 1687 siege of Golconda", who bargained half the proceeds for passage out — whereupon "the sea captain killed the slave and sold the diamond to the eminent Indian diamond merchant Jamchand" [10]. The story is unverifiable and it is the only version of a mine worker's biography that the diamond literature preserves at all.
The terms of the trade
The sultanate did not dig; it licensed and skimmed. "Golconda mines were owned by the local king, who leased operation to diamond merchants, either foreigners or Indians of the goldsmith caste. As well as rent, the king received 2% from sales and was entitled to keep all diamonds weighing over 10 carats" [4].
That last clause is the mechanism behind the whole legend. Every stone large enough to become famous belonged to the crown by right — which is why the great diamonds appear in royal treasuries rather than merchants' inventories, and why the history of Golconda's stones is a history of conquest and gift rather than of purchase. It is also why smuggling was worth a leg wound.
Cotton, not diamonds, was the volume trade: "During the early seventeenth century a strong cotton-weaving industry existed in Golconda", exporting muslin and calico to Persia, Europe, Java and Sumatra [6]. The diamonds were the apex of an economy that ran on cloth.
Tavernier
Almost everything Europe knew about these mines came through one man. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605–1689) was "a 17th-century French gem merchant and traveler" who "estimated that he travelled 60,000 leagues in six voyages to Persia and India between 1630 and 1668 which he published as Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (Six Voyages, 1676)" [7]. He reached the mines on his second journey: travelling "to India as far as Agra, and from there to the Kingdom of Golconda", he "visited the court of the Mughal—Emperor Shah Jahan—and made his first trip to the Kollur diamond mines" [7].
He was a merchant of the first rank, not a tourist: "In these later voyages, Tavernier traveled as a merchant of the highest rank, trading in costly jewels and other precious wares, and finding his chief customers among the greatest princes of the East" [7]. His single most consequential transaction made him a baron. He is "best known for his 1666 purchase of the 116-carat Tavernier Blue diamond that he subsequently sold to Louis XIV in 1668 for 120,000 livres, the equivalent of 172,000 ounces of pure gold, and a letter of ennoblement" [7]; in 1669 he bought the fief of Aubonne and became a baron [7].
His descriptions are still the primary evidence for stones that no longer exist in the form he saw them. Of the Great Mogul, shown to him by Aurangzeb around 1665, he wrote: "The first piece that Akel Khan (Chief Keeper of the King's jewels) placed in my hands was the great diamond, which is rose cut, round and very high on one side. On the lower edge there is a slight crack, and a little flaw in it. Its water is fine, and weighs 319+1⁄2 ratis, which makes 280 of our carats, the rati being 7⁄8th of a carat" [12]. Elsewhere he compared it to an egg: "The stone is of the same form as if one cut an egg through the middle" [12]. And of the blue stone he had bought, his description was a single word that has governed its literature ever since — Tavernier described its colour as "a beautiful violet" [1].
The mines themselves were lost and found again by way of his book. All memory of Kollur's position "was lost until it was rediscovered in the 1880s by Valentine Ball, an Irish geologist", who mapped the Golconda mines for A Manual of the Geology of India — and "In his annotated English edition of the French gem merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier's book Travels in India (1676), Ball notes that ruins of houses and mine workings could still be found at Kollur" [4].
Where the stones went
The roll is short and almost entirely royal. "Other diamonds thought to have originated at Kollur include the Koh-i-Noor, the Great Mogul, the Wittelsbach-Graff, the Regent, the Daria-i-Noor, the Orlov, the Nizam, the Dresden Green, and the Nassak" [4]; to which the wider list adds the Idol's Eye and the Florentine, "as well as now-untraceable diamonds such as the Akbar Shah, the Nizam Diamond, and the Great Mogul Diamond" [5].
**The Hope**, the best-documented of them, is "a 45.52-carat blue diamond" that "was extracted in the 17th century from the Kollur Mine in Andhra Pradesh, India" [9]. The Smithsonian, which has held it since 1958, traces the chain: Tavernier's stone was recut in 1673 by the court jeweller Sieur Pitau into "a 67 1/8-carat stone" known as "the Blue Diamond of the Crown," or the "French Blue", worn by Louis XIV on a neck ribbon; reset by Louis XV in 1749 for the Order of the Golden Fleece; and stolen "During a week-long looting of the crown jewels in September of 1792" [1]. It reappeared in London in 1812 in the hands of Daniel Eliason, and "Strong evidence indicates that the stone was the recut French Blue and the same stone known today as the Hope Diamond" [1]. Its name comes from a catalogue entry: "The first reference to the diamond's next owner is found in the 1839 entry of the gem collection catalog of the well-known Henry Philip Hope, the man from whom the diamond takes its name. Unfortunately, the catalog does not reveal where or from whom Hope acquired the diamond or how much he paid for it" [1].
**The Orlov** is almost certainly the Great Mogul under another name: "Most modern scholars are now convinced that the Great Mogul is actually the Orlov Diamond, today part of Catherine the Great's imperial Russian sceptre in the Kremlin" [12]. Its rough weight was 787 carats and it reached Shah Jahan as a gift from "Emir Jemla" — Mir Jumla, the Isfahan oil-merchant's son who became vizier of Golconda and then defected to the Mughals [12] [16]. Its cutting is a small disaster preserved in the record: the Venetian lapidary Ortensio Borgio ground away at the inclusions until the stone had lost most of its weight, and "Shah Jahan spared Borgio's head, instead fining him 10,000 rupees (all the money he had) for his ineptitude" [12].
**The Regent**, 140.64 carats, is the one whose paper trail begins with a letter. Thomas Pitt, Governor of Fort St George, wrote to his London agent on 6 November 1701: "... This accompanies the model of a Stone I have lately seene; it weighs Mang. 303 and carr tts 426. It is of an excellent christaline water without any fowles, only att one end in the flat part there is one or two little flaws which will come out in cutting" [10]. It went to London "hidden in the heel of his son Robert's shoe", was cut over two years for about £5,000, and sold to the French Regent in 1717 for £135,000 [10]. The acquisition smelled badly enough that Alexander Pope put it in verse: "Asleep and naked as an INDIAN lay / An honest factor stole a gem away" [10]. It sat in the crowns of Louis XV and Louis XVI and is in the Louvre.
**The Daria-i-Noor**, 182 carats and "the world's largest known pink diamond" [13], and the Koh-i-Noor left India together in the same event: "In 1739, Nader Shah of Iran invaded Northern India and occupied Delhi. As payment for returning the crown of India to the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah, he took possession of the entire fabled treasury of the Mughals, including the Daria-i-Noor, the Koh-i-Noor, and the Peacock Throne" [13]. A 1965 Canadian study of the Iranian crown jewels concluded the Daria-i-Noor was probably part of the Great Table diamond Tavernier described in 1642, cut in two, the smaller half being the Noor-ul-Ain [13].
**The Dresden Green**, 41 carats, is the anomaly: a natural green whose "unique apple green colour is due to natural exposure to radioactive materials" [14]. Its record starts in a newspaper — "a historical record dating back to 1722, when a London news-sheet carried an article about it" — and it was bought by Augustus III of Poland at the Leipzig Fair in 1742 [14]. It escaped the 2019 Green Vault burglary because it was on loan to the Metropolitan Museum in New York [14].
**The Nassak** is the one that went the other way — out of a temple rather than a treasury. It "was the adornment in the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple, near Nashik, in the state of Maharashtra, India from at least 1500 to 1817", and "The British East India Company captured the diamond through the Third Anglo-Maratha War and sold it to British jewellers Rundell and Bridge in 1818" [15]. It is now in a private museum in Lebanon, "though there have been some calls for its return and restoration to the Indian temple" [15].
The Koh-i-Noor problem
The stone everyone associates with Golconda is the one with the weakest claim to it, and the sources that assert the connection say so in their own text. The Koh-i-Noor, 105.6 carats and set in the Crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is described this way: "There are multiple conflicting legends on the origin of the diamond, but many Victorian commentators identified it with a diamond said to have originated in the Kollur Mine in India" [8]. Identified by Victorian commentators with a diamond *said to have* originated at Kollur — two hedges deep before the sentence ends.
The colonial administrator who investigated it reached the obvious conclusion: "According to the colonial administrator Theo Metcalfe, there is 'very meagre and imperfect' evidence of the early history of the Koh-i-Noor before the 1740s" [8]. And: "There is no record of its original weight" [8]. The first solid attestation is late and is an inventory of plunder: "The first verifiable record of the diamond comes from a history by Muhammad Kazim Marvi of the 1740s invasion of Northern India by Afsharid Iran under Nader Shah. Marvi notes the Koh-i-Noor as one of many stones on the Mughal Peacock Throne that Nader looted from Delhi" [8].
Everything before that is a chain of identifications, each of which the record itself marks as uncertain. Alauddin Khalji took a great diamond from the Kakatiyas in 1310, called "unrivaled in the world" by Amir Khusrau's Kakatiya messenger, and "The 18th century chronicler Khafi Khan identifies this precious stone as the Koh-i-Noor" — four centuries later. Humayun received a diamond the Baburnama valued at "two and half days food for the whole world", and "William Dalrymple notes that this diamond may or may not have been the Koh-i-noor: there were several large diamonds in India at the time" [8]. That last clause is the whole difficulty: a region producing ten million carats over two millennia produced many great stones, and a famous name attaches itself backwards to all of them.
The Deccan appears in that chain in an odd cameo. In 1547 Tahmasp I of Persia "sent the diamond to his Shia ally, the Nizam Shah of Ahmadnagar Sultanate in Deccan. However, Mihtar Jamal — the envoy carrying the diamond — absconded with it" [8], and it was an ambassador of Golconda, Khur Shah, who confirmed the identification with Babur's stone [8]. Whatever the Koh-i-Noor is, its documented Deccan connection is a theft in transit, not a mine.
The archive states the position plainly, because it is the sources' own: the Koh-i-Noor's Kollur origin is a Victorian attribution to a stone with no securely recorded history before the 1740s. Its ownership is separately disputed by four governments, and the British position rests on "the terms of the Last Treaty of Lahore in 1849" [8] — a treaty signed on behalf of an eleven-year-old.
Exhaustion, and a word that outlived the thing
The mines died of success. "Due to centuries of excessive mining, their production was exhausted by 1830" [5]; Kollur itself "continued operating until the mid-19th century" [4]. Brazil and then South Africa took the trade, and Golconda ceased to be a place in the diamond business.
What survived was the name, converted into a grade. "Some gemologists use this classification to denote the extremely rare Type IIa diamond, a crystal that essentially lacks nitrogen impurities and is therefore colorless" [6]. The physical basis is real: "Golconda diamonds are graded as Type IIa, are formed of pure carbon, are devoid of nitrogen, and are large with high clarity. They are often described as diamonds of the first water" [5]. So a stone from any mine on earth can now be sold as 'Golconda-type', and the fortress that never held a mine gives its name to a chemical purity.
It gave its name to wealth generally as well: "Its name has taken a generic meaning and has come to be associated with great wealth" [6], and the mines seeded a literature — "Sindbad the Sailor's valley of diamonds, the gem lore of Marco Polo, and the theme of Russell Conwell's inspirational lecture 'Acres of Diamonds'" [5]. The prices the name still commands are not nostalgic: in 2013 the Princie Diamond from the Jewels of the Nizams sold for US$39.3 million, "the world record for US$1.1 million per carat" [5].
The place itself is gone in the most literal way available. Kollur was "Evacuated in the 2000s to make way for the Pulichinthala irrigation project", and "the area is submerged by 50 feet (15 m) of water for most of the year" [4]. The seam that produced the Hope, the Orlov, the Regent and the Dresden Green is under a reservoir.
Dates in this essay
The archive dates the Golconda Sultanate 1518–1687 per content/DATE-CONVENTIONS.md. The Met's Deccan survey gives the Qutb Shahis as 1496–1687, dating from Sultan Quli's arrival as Bahmani governor rather than from his declaration of independence; the fort record gives his governorship as beginning "around 1501" and has him "formally became independent in 1518". The register's rule takes the declaration, so 1518 stands and 1496 is recorded here as the alternative.
The capital moved from Golconda to Hyderabad in 1590 or 1591. The fort record says the fort "remained the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty until 1590"; the archive's Charminar essay and its Golconda entity both use 1591, the year the new city was laid out. The archive uses 1591 for the founding of Hyderabad and treats 1590 as the date the court began to move.
Kollur opened c. 1619 and closed in the mid-19th century; the wider Golconda field is dated exhausted by 1830. The two are not in conflict — one mine outlasted the field's commercial peak.
Tavernier's blue stone is given as 116 carats in one account of his purchase and as 112 3/16 carats by the Smithsonian, which holds its descendant. The archive prefers the Smithsonian's figure for the rough and notes the discrepancy rather than reconciling it.
Where authorities disagree about when a state began or ended, the archive follows one rule — a polity is dated from the assumption of sovereign power in its own capital, and to the settlement that extinguished it — and records the alternatives rather than hiding them.
Open questions
The Koh-i-Noor's origin at Kollur is an attribution, not a record. No source read for this essay produced evidence of its provenance before the 1740s, and the administrator who looked called what exists 'very meagre and imperfect'. Its original weight is unrecorded. The archive should not repeat the Kollur attribution as fact, and this essay does not.
Tavernier's own text was not opened for this essay. Every quotation attributed to him here — the egg simile, the Akel Khan passage, the 'beautiful violet' — is taken from sources quoting the Six Voyages or Valentine Ball's 1889 edition, both of which are public-domain and available. Reading them directly is the single highest-value next step for this page, and would also settle the 116 vs 112 3/16 carat discrepancy.
The 2% royalty and the ten-carat rule are stated in one source and are the most consequential administrative facts in the essay — they explain why every great Golconda stone is a royal possession. Neither was traced to a Qutb Shahi document or a European factory record here.
Nothing was found on the mine workers as people: no names, no wage records beyond 'food in lieu of money', no account of whether the 60,000 were free labour, bonded, enslaved, or a mixture. The Regent's origin legend is the only individual biography the literature preserves and it is unverifiable. This is the largest gap in the subject and it is a gap in the sources, not only in this essay.
William Methwold's and Andries Soury's 1621 observations are quoted here at second hand. Methwold's relation was printed in Purchas his Pilgrimes and should be read directly before the 20,000–30,000 figure is treated as a firsthand count.
Whether the Great Mogul and the Orlov are the same stone is stated here as the modern scholarly consensus on the authority of two tertiary sources that both say 'most modern scholars are now convinced'. The underlying gemmological argument was not examined.
The Nizam Diamond, the Akbar Shah and the Great Mogul are listed as 'now-untraceable'. What happened to them, and whether any survives recut under another name, was not established.
