What a silsila is
A *silsila* is a chain of spiritual succession in which each master names his successor, and the chain is recorded. It is not a metaphor for influence: it is a documented list, and the orders maintain it deliberately.
The Chishti line in South Asia runs from Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer through Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki, Baba Farid, Nizamuddin Auliya and Nasiruddin Chiragh Dehlavi — and then, with Gesudaraz, south into the Deccan.
Why the chain travels
Because succession is personal, a lineage moves when a person moves. Gesudaraz’s journey to Gulbarga is therefore not merely biographical: it is the mechanism by which the Deccan was joined to a network reaching back through Delhi and Ajmer to the earliest generations of Islam.
