What the archive does not know
Every unresolved question the sources left open across this collection, gathered in one place rather than buried at the foot of each page.
The twelve illustrations of the Tarif-i Husain Shahi — commissioned by Hussain Nizam Shah I's widow while acting as regent c. 1565–69, and showing her beside her husband in six of them — are the earliest surviving Deccani paintings, and most of her portraits were scratched out or overpainted after her son Murtaza imprisoned her in 1569. This essay covers Chand Bibi and Malik Ambar but not Khanzada Humayun, the third woman to govern this kingdom; the archive's Deccani painting essay treats the manuscript, and a fuller account of her regency is owed.
The Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar: A Convert's Son, a Warrior Queen, and an Ethiopian Regent
The Hindu-Brahmin origin of Nizam-ul-Mulk Bahri (Timma Bhat of Pathri) is sourced here only through tertiary summaries of the Persian chronicles; a check against a translation of Firishta or the Burhan-i Ma'asir is needed.
The Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar: A Convert's Son, a Warrior Queen, and an Ethiopian Regent
The manner of Chand Bibi's death in 1600 — killed by her own troops, suicide, or escape — is preserved in conflicting accounts; Sarah Waheed's study treats the versions as separate traditions rather than settling on one.
The Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar: A Convert's Son, a Warrior Queen, and an Ethiopian Regent
Attribution and dating of the so-called Ahmadnagar Ragamala (including the Hindola Raga, c. 1585) remain debated, with a provincial rather than courtly origin proposed.
The Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar: A Convert's Son, a Warrior Queen, and an Ethiopian Regent
Sources differ on whether Malik Ambar founded Khirki/Khadki around 1610 or shifted his court there in 1612, and popular accounts of his death (e.g. a duel) are unverified; only the date 14 May 1626 is well attested.
The Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar: A Convert's Son, a Warrior Queen, and an Ethiopian Regent
Britannica's standalone Malik Ambar biography and the ASI page for Ahmadnagar fort could not be fetched (403/timeout) and should be added in a future pass.
The Nizam Shahs of Ahmadnagar: A Convert's Son, a Warrior Queen, and an Ethiopian Regent
Where in Ethiopia was he born? Eaton reads the name Chapu as pointing to the Kambata region of southern Ethiopia; Omar Ali and the tertiary literature give Harar, several hundred kilometres east. Both are respected; no document opened for this essay settles it, and the archive's Harar entry should be read with that in mind.
The Regent Who Was Bought: Malik Ambar and the Habshis of the Deccan
The Janjira attribution is chronologically impossible as stated. The fort record credits Malik Ambar with its construction and dates that construction to 1567 — when Ambar was about nineteen and still enslaved, years before his manumission in c. 1594. Either the date belongs to an earlier structure, or the attribution belongs to a later rebuilding, or both; the source asserts them together without noticing the conflict.
The Regent Who Was Bought: Malik Ambar and the Habshis of the Deccan
The revenue settlement is the most consequential claim made about him and the least evidenced in anything opened here. No source read for this essay described its survey method, assessment rates or treatment of village officers, or identified the later settlements said to rest on it. Eaton's chapter and the Persian chronicles he cites (notably the Futuhat-i 'Adil Shahi, composed 1640–43) would be the place to establish it.
The Regent Who Was Bought: Malik Ambar and the Habshis of the Deccan
Army composition figures conflict in date rather than in substance: 10,000 Habshis and 40,000 Deccanis 'by 1610' in one account, 10,000 Habshi and 40,000 Marathas 'by 1620' in another. Whether these are two counts of one force a decade apart, or the same count misdated, was not determined.
The Regent Who Was Bought: Malik Ambar and the Habshis of the Deccan
Chengiz Khan, the Ahmadnagar regent who owned him for twenty years, is named in every account and described in none that were opened. His own career — an Ethiopian former slave who became Regent Minister before Ambar did — is the precedent that makes Ambar's rise legible, and it is missing from this essay for lack of a source read.
The Regent Who Was Bought: Malik Ambar and the Habshis of the Deccan
Jahangir's own words are quoted here at second hand. The epithets 'the ill-starred' and 'the black fated' are given by tertiary sources reporting the Jahangirnama; the memoir itself was not opened for this essay, and the phrasing should be checked against a published translation before it is treated as the emperor's exact language.
The Regent Who Was Bought: Malik Ambar and the Habshis of the Deccan
Britannica's dedicated biography of Malik Ambar returned HTTP 403 to every fetch attempt made for this essay. The Britannica citation used here is its Habshi article, which was opened. The biography page may carry material that would change or sharpen several statements above.
