The Gakkhar Clan: Steadfast Allies in the Storms of Mughal History

Published on 5/24/2024

History is often written in grand narratives of emperors and empires, but the threads of loyalty woven by key allies are just as vital. The Akbarnama, Abu'l Fazl's monumental chronicle of Emperor Akbar's reign, offers fascinating glimpses into these crucial relationships. One such account highlights the Gakhar clan, a powerful group residing in the strategic region between the Bihat (Jhelum) and the Indus rivers, whose unwavering fidelity proved invaluable during the turbulent years of Emperor Humayun.

A Legacy Forged in Service

The Gakkhars were not newcomers to the political landscape. Their history in the region is traced back through figures like Malik Kid, Malik Kalan, Bir, and Tatar Khan. It was Tatar Khan who established a significant connection with the Mughal dynasty, entering the service of Emperor Babar, Akbar's grandfather, during his conquest of India. Tatar Khan's "good work" and "especial devotion" in battles, such as the war with Rana Sanga, cemented the Gakkhars' place as allies. This historical bond, rooted in shared campaigns and service, laid the groundwork for the loyalty that would be tested in the future.

Loyalty Under Pressure: The Kamran Crisis

The true measure of the Gakkhars' fidelity came during one of Humayun's most challenging periods – his struggle against his rebellious brother, Mirza Kamran. After suffering defeats and facing constant threats, Kamran, in a state of distress, sought refuge in the territory of Sultan Adam Gakhar, Tatar Khan's successor.

This was a moment of immense pressure for Sultan Adam. Kamran was a Mughal prince, but also a source of immense discord and danger to the reigning emperor. Yet, Sultan Adam, described as having "the breath of loyalty" in his head, chose a path of remarkable integrity. He did not simply harbor Kamran; he informed Emperor Humayun of his presence.

A Calculated Risk, A Principled Stand

Sultan Adam's position was delicate. He had previously concluded a treaty with Sikandar Sur, another Afghan contender for power, who held Sultan Adam's son, Lashkari, as a hostage. Surrendering Kamran risked breaking this compact and endangering his son. He conveyed these concerns to Humayun, explaining his predicament with "humble language" and "apologies."

Despite the potential complications, Humayun, recognizing the Gakkhars' historical loyalty and Sultan Adam's difficult position, initially hesitated to force the issue. However, the strategic importance of securing Kamran and the need to quell rebellion eventually led Humayun to march towards the Gakhar country.

Sultan Adam, after some understandable "landholder-like excuses" and hesitation, ultimately made his choice. Through the efforts of Mun'im Khan, sent by Humayun to soothe and persuade him, Sultan Adam brought Mirza Kamran to the imperial camp near Parhala.

The Weight of Fidelity

This act was more than just a political maneuver; it was a profound demonstration of wafa (loyalty or fidelity) in a time when betrayal was rampant, even within the imperial family itself. While Kamran consistently chose "opposition and discord" over "concord," Sultan Adam chose to honor the historical bond with Humayun's lineage.

Abu'l Fazl's detailed account of this episode serves not just as historical record, but as a testament to the value placed on such loyalty. It highlights the contrast between the steadfastness of allies like Sultan Adam and the "ingratitude" and "wickedness" of those who, like Kamran, were "unmindful of benefits."

Preserving a Legacy of Loyalty

The Akbarnama's meticulous recording of the Gakkhars' history and their actions during this critical juncture ensures that their contribution is not forgotten. It shows that history is shaped not only by the powerful but also by those who, in challenging circumstances, choose the path of fidelity and principle.

In remembering the Gakhar clan and Sultan Adam, we are reminded that loyalty, though sometimes tested by difficult choices, remains a powerful and enduring force, capable of influencing the course of empires and earning a respected place in the annals of time. Their story, preserved through the detailed narrative of the Akbarnama, continues to resonate as an example of steadfastness in the face of adversity.
